January 2014 YA book releases

It is the start of a brand new year (hope you all had an awesome holiday season).  January is the month of spoiling yourself.  You got gift cards or money for Christmas, or, like me, you use the January sales as an excuse to buy loads of stuff you can’t really afford and don’t really need.  Here is a list of January new releases I will be adding to my bulging book shelf.

Darkest Fear by Cate Tiernan

Vivi has known the truth about her family—and herself—since she was thirteen. But that doesn’t mean she’s accepted it. Being Haguari isn’t something she feels she’ll ever accept. How can she feel like anything but a freak knowing that it’s in her genes to turn into a jaguar?

Now eighteen, Vivi’s ready to break away from the traditions of her heritage. But all of that changes with the shocking, devastating deaths of her parents and the mysteries left behind. Vivi discovers family she never even knew she had, and a life open with possibility. New friends, new loyalties, and even romance all lay ahead—but so do dangers unlike anything Vivi ever could have imagined.

Why I want to read it

Ok so the truth is that I am not all that sure about this one.  I have had a rocky relationship with shape shifter based books in the past and find myself disappointed in them more often than not, but for some reason I have hope that the 'one' will come along and maybe the Darkest Fear will be it.  I love the cover and it does sound interesting so my fingers are firmly crossed.

A Breath of Frost by Alyxandra Harvey

In 1814, three cousins-Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope-discover their unknown family lineage of witchcraft. Beyond the familiar manicured gardens and ballrooms of Regency London, a dangerous, alluring new underworld visible only to those with power is now open to the cousins.  But unbeknownst to them, by claiming their power, the three cousins have inadvertently opened the gates to the Underworld.  Now the dead, ghouls, hellhounds-and the most terrifying of all: the spirits of dark witches known as the Greymalkin Sisters-are hunting and killing young debutante witches for their powers.  And, somehow, Emma is connected to the murders...because she keeps finding the bodies.  Can the cousins unravel the clues and mystery behind their heritage and power before their gifts are stripped away ...or even worse, another witch is killed?

Why I want to read it

I love the sound of this one.  Historical fiction that features witches, ghouls, hell hounds, the underworld and of course ballrooms what could possibly go wrong? Ok, so honestly this has the potential to be a bit of a hot mess but it also could be a hell of a lot of fun.  I have high hopes for this one and can't wait to get my hands on it.

The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanna Wiebe

So many secrets for such a small island. From the moment Anne Merchant arrives at Cania Christy, a boarding school for the world’s wealthiest teens, the hushed truths of this strange, unfamiliar land begin calling to her—sometimes as lulling drumbeats in the night, sometimes as piercing shrieks.  One by one, unanswered questions rise. No one will tell her why a line is painted across the island or why she is forbidden to cross it. Her every move—even her performance at the school dance—is graded as part of a competition to become valedictorian, a title that brings rewards no one will talk about. And Anne discovers that the parents of her peers surrender million-dollar possessions to enroll their kids in Cania Christy, leaving her to wonder what her lowly funeral director father could have paid to get her in… and why.  As a beautiful senior struggles to help Anne make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world without breaking the rules that bind him, she must summon the courage to face the impossible truth—and change it—before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.

Why I want to read it

The whole boarding school for the world's wealthiest teen's thing is normally enough to make me completely ignore a book, I do not want to read about snobby teens.  But I really like mysteries and this sounds a little spooky so I am going to check this one out and hope for the best.

A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller

Welcome to the world of the fabulously wealthy in London, 1909, where dresses and houses are overwhelmingly opulent, social class means everything, and women are taught to be nothing more than wives and mothers. Into this world comes seventeen-year-old Victoria Darling, who wants only to be an artist—a nearly impossible dream for a girl.  After Vicky poses nude for her illicit art class, she is expelled from her French finishing school. Shamed and scandalized, her parents try to marry her off to the wealthy Edmund Carrick-Humphrey. But Vicky has other things on her mind: her clandestine application to the Royal College of Art; her participation in the suffragette movement; and her growing attraction to a working-class boy who may be her muse—or may be the love of her life. As the world of debutante balls, corsets, and high society obligations closes in around her, Vicky must figure out: just how much is she willing to sacrifice to pursue her dreams?

Why I want to read it

GIVE. THIS. TO. ME. NOW.  I cannot wait to get my hands on this one.  I love a good historical romance especially if it centres around a strong female character.  It also has a really beautiful cover and most early reviews are really positive.

In Dreams by Erica Orloff

Inception meets Unearthly in this hot romance for fans of Meg Cabot’s Abandon Series!

In the land of nightmares, she finds the man of her dreams...He haunts her in her dreams. She is always searching, looking for the man who calls her from afar, a disembodied voice who knows everything about her.  But when she discovers the unimaginable secret her family has hidden for so long, her dreams—and her nightmares—invade her reality.  Her true love beckons, but the terrors await her. . . . Can she find him in time, or will their love—and her life—be destroyed?  Sixteen-year-old Iris has a recurring dream a long corridor of many doors, and behind each door a hidden world—some magical, some terrifying. But always she is searching for the man who calls to her—the man of her dreams—who knows everything about her, who stirs feelings in her she’s never felt before. When she discovers her father is actually the god of dreams, her nightmares and dreams follow her into reality, with both frightening and romantic results. Hunted by the god of nightmares, stalked by the horrifying creatures of the underworld, Iris must try to navigate both her worlds, as she tries to finally be with Sebastian, the man of her dreams. Can she triumph over the dangers that have haunted her forever, and be with Sebastian, or will terrors ultimately destroy them both?

Why I want to read it

This is another one that will either be amazing or a bit of a disappointment.  I really like the idea it sounds different and original but might be a little too romance heavy for me.  Comparisons have been drawn between this and Inception which is enough for me to add it to my wish list.

Minders by Michele Jaffe

A high concept, cinematic read with a surprising twist, MINDERS asks the question: who is really watching whom?

Q: If the boy you love commits a crime, would you turn him in?

Sadie Ames is a type-A teenager from the wealthy suburbs. She's been accepted to the prestigious Mind Corps Fellowship program, where she'll spend six weeks as an observer inside the head of Ford, a troubled boy with a passion for the crumbling architecture of the inner city. There's just one problem: Sadie's fallen in love with him.

Q: What if the crime is murder?

Ford Winters is haunted by the murder of his older brother, James. As Sadie falls deeper into his world, dazzled by the shimmering pinpricks of color that form images in his mind, she begins to think she knows him. Then Ford does something unthinkable.

Q: What if you saw it happen from inside his mind?

Back in her own body, Sadie is faced with the ultimate dilemma. With Ford's life in her hands, she must decide what is right and what is wrong. And how well she can really ever know someone, even someone she loves.

Why I want to read it

It sounds complex, serious and imaginative.  I really love it when YA fiction asks big questions and I am hoping that is what I am going to get from this.  It also sounds interesting and exciting, this is exactly the kind of book I like to read and I can't wait to get stuck in.

Vitro by Jessica Khoury

On a remote island in the Pacific, Corpus scientists have taken test tube embryos and given them life. These beings—the Vitros—have knowledge and abilities most humans can only dream of. But they also have one enormous flaw.

Sophie Crue is determined to get to Skin Island and find her mother, a scientist who left Sophie behind years ago. With the help of Jim Julien, a young charter pilot, she arrives--and discovers a terrifying secret she never imagined: she has a Vitro twin, Lux, who is the culmination of Corpus's dangerous research.

Now Sophie is torn between reuniting with the mother who betrayed her and protecting the genetically enhanced twin she never knew existed. But untangling the twisted strands of these relationships will have to wait, for Sophie and Jim are about to find out what happens when science stretches too far beyond its reach.

Why I want to read it

Science Fiction is my thing, so this is the easily the January release I am most looking forward to.  It sounds really exciting and I think I will fall in love with it.

What books are you looking forward to this month?
